• bulb4Just because your summer perennials are losing their vigor doesn’t mean it’s time to put away your gloves! On the contrary, fall is the perfect time to plant the bulbs that will welcome you as flowers in the spring.

Here in Louisville, we are in Climate Hardiness Zone 6b, so anytime from mid-October to mid- December is usually the best time to plant bulbs, though we usually wait until after the first frost to plant bulbs. Choose a location that has well-drained soil, receives at least 6 hours of sun a day, and assure that the soil has plenty of organic matter like compost or manure. It’s helpful to use a good fertilizer like Espoma Bulb-Tone when planting.

Tulips, daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops, and grape hyacinths all do well here in Kentucky. St. Matthews Feed & Seed has a large selection of high-quality bulbs from Netherland Bulbs right now. Lower quality bulbs will likely produce less blooms, if they bloom at all.

Depending on the size and amount of bulbs you are planting, there are some tools that can make your planting process easier, such as a bulb dibber, long- and short-handled bulb planter, and a shovel. St. Matthews Feed & Seed has a wide selection of quality gardening tools by DeWitt and Terra Verde, including the above mentioned, so peruse our selection and speak to our staff about which tools would best serve your needs.

As a rule of thumb, plant bulbs at a depth of three times their width. So, for example, if the bulb is 2 inches wide, then you will plant it 6 inches deep. Be sure to plant your bulbs generously in the event that some of them do not bloom. After planting, fertilize, water well, and cover with mulch to discourage weeds.
