When planting trees and shrubs there are a few helpful tips to keep in mind:

    1. The hole you dig should be the depth of the rootball and twice as wide.

    2. Remove your plant from its pot, and loosen its roots.

    3. Make sure the top of the rootball is at or above ground level when placing it in the hole, and spread the roots so they are radiating out from the rootball.

    4. Add an amendment like compost or peat moss to the soil. We recommend adding Espoma Bio-Tone Starter Plus with beneficial bacteria to the amended soil.

    5. Fill the hole with amended soil, making sure the roots are in good contact with the soil.

    6. Soak well with water and add mulch to keep in moisture.

    7. Newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered thoroughly once a week. The tip to watering an establishing tree or shrub is “slow and low.” Allow the water to slowly flow around the tree so that it penetrates deep into the earth to establish deeper roots. Between 30 to 60 minutes at a trickling rate is suggested.

    * When warm spells occur in the winter, remember to water because the freezing and thawing draws moisture from the soil.
